Hi, I recently installed IE7 which works well, but when I try to Edit any of my settings in NIS 2005, I get a script error, which reads as follows:
An error has occured in the script on this page

The only way I can correct this fault is to un-install IE7, then NIS2005 works correctly.
Any help will be appreciated.

2)If you are getting the "object expected" error when trying to access Norton AntiSpam settings (Maybe other situations as well):
I have never had this problem personally, but after many people asking me to fix it I have a fix that worked for many people (but not all). This is what to do:
Uninstall Internet Explorer 7, reboot, then:
a)If you have your NORTON installation cd: uninstall norton and liveupdate and all norton parts then reboot then reinstall norton and update it repeatedly until you are told there are no more updates then reboot. Then disable norton internet security (firewall) and antivirus for 1 hour (not until reboot) then reinstall ie7 and do all updates. Reboot and reenable all norton products (or just wait the hour) and you should be good. Has worked for many people with this issue. Thank you, Duncan Webberley for your help with this issue.
b)If you DO NOT have your norton installation cd: Disable all norton products for 1 hour (do not uninstall them) then reinstall ie7 wih norton disabled. Now reboot. Make sure all Norton products are reenabled.
FOR NORTON PRODUCTS FROM 2006 or newer:
2006 products were supposed to be fixed through liveupdate and 2007 products should not contain any errors at all. (At least regarding these issues) I have found out that norton is giving free upgrades to users of Norton Internet Security 2006, Norton AntiVirus 2006, Norton System Works 2006, or Norton System Works Premier 2006 with a current subscription (not expired). You are eligible to download and use the latest product versions (2007 or newer as they come out) for your Norton product as they become available during your subscription period. This is their new policy supposedly for future products so people can always have the newest software. This is probably to save them the money of supporting older versions. From symantecs website:

THEY ARE NOT PUBLICIZING THIS SO PLEASE SPREAD THIS AROUND TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW WHO USES NORTON.
Also, the 2007 version of Internet Security doesn't automatically come with Norton AntiSpam, Ad Blocking, Norton Parental Control or Confidential Information Blocking (which all came with 2006 version of NIS)
BUT there is a free add-on download from Norton that adds all of these features for this version once you upgrade to 2007, here:

There is a problem in the niscmnht.dll that comes with NIS 2005 and it does not work with IE7.
I edited the file and fixed it. However, Symantec should fix the file to recognize IE7.
|||I spent about 2 hours via email/online chat with Symantec running me through various help, installing various parts and pieces, nothing came out of it except "We are working on the fix"...uninstall IE7, and install IE6. And a waste of my 2 hours. The above site was very helpful! It seems that Symantec doesn't want to fix the problem. Wonder how much more of this type of coding issues is throughout Symantec's products? Is this the face that Symantec wants to show the public who purchases their products?|||
I also have contacted symantec and they seem determined to get all of us (users of 2005 and 2006 norton programs to upgrade to 2007 editions. Does anyone know if the problem is in fact fixed in 2007?

Venkatesh: After the release of IE 7.0 Symantec has released program updates which will make Norton 2005 programs compatible with IE 7.0. Once you download those program updates you should not be getting the script errors.
Venkatesh: However, if you are still getting the script errors even after downloading the latest program updates, I suggest you to uninstall IE 7.0 and install IE 6.0.

I have edited the dll using the new code supplied by pjondevelopment in A. Jordan's post. BTW i used a program called PE Explorer free 30 day trial to edit the dll.
I just reinstalled windows so i will be testing the functionality of my new dll after i update windows and internet explorer.
Will let people know how it works and the dll will be available by email. (If i was successful)
The only thing im worried about is whether the dlls are the same throughout the norton products (and therefore if my edited dll from my norton internet security 2005 antispyware edition will work for people with different programs or versions). Worst comes to worst.. people can email me their existing niscmnht.dll and i can edit it for them and reemail the fixed versions.
Anyone with any info please post.

I have updated to internet explorer 7 and my norton problems started. I then replaced the dll with the edited version i made and it works fine. If anyone wants the fix or instructions on how to do it post your email address and ill respond accordingly.
Please verify that your niscmnht.dll is the same version as mine.. do a search for it.. rt click on it and go to properties..version tab.. then click on file version and it should be 8.2.0.23
If it isnt that version... post me your email and ill email you so you can send me a copy of your dll and ill edit it and sent it back to you.

I'm getting the exact same script error message that the original poster was getting which appears to be slightly different to yours. Would your fix work for that problem also? My version is different to yours as well - 8.2.0.21
Any instruction would need to be pretty easy to follow for me or I fear it may be out of my league!
If you reckon I could get Norton 2005 working again without the script errors I;ll post my email on reply.

I have responded to all of the emails i have received either with fixed dlls or with instructions on how to fix it ( a little complicated). Please post if your problem is fixed.
Rob Wheeler and du1608 - Rob has sent me his dlls and after looking at his options.dll i didnt see any html at all so i think your options. dll files may be corrupt. Please make sure that u have done all liveupdates and if that doesnt fix it try to reinstall the norton product and if not email me @. errorhelp @.gmail.com and we can try me emailing you my options.dll (that i see has the mentioned options html) . I use norton internet security 2005 Antispyware Edition

I have been mostly successful in fixing the problems but for those I have been unable to help... I have found Norton Internet Security 2007 on ebay.com for under $24. Do an advanced search on ebay for norton internet security and check "buy it now" and sort by lowest price first. I just bought one today for my mother-in-law. While I hate promoting Symantecs agenda of getting us all to upgrade to 2007 version, I am glad to help people get it for cheaper than $70 (what a ripoff) Basically I buy a new one every year from ebay.. Cheaper than renewing. If anyone needs help email me.

Some people have been getting additional script errors after using my fixed DLLs (permission denied and others). The fix is to rt click on the dll and go to properties..then on the general tab if there is an "UNBLOCK" button.. push it to fix the issues. Apparently the dll keeps some kind of signatures from my system and if your computer realizes that the dll is from a different machine, it blocks some access to it, causing the errors. Thanks to Simon Verlee for the help on this one.

So I was about to fix the faulty code on my mother-in-laws laptop after I upgraded her to ie7 . She uses Norton Internet Security 2006 so I expected the szmodify is undefined error but it didnt happen when accessing my firewall rules. So I checked out the code in the dll and it appears that symantec has fixed the code at some point? The code was not the same as the one I used that would work for an ie8 or ie9 but nortons code will only work for ie7 (guess they didnt learn their lesson of programming limitations with lazy code.
Still getting the script error when accessing log viewer but if you click no once it stops until u exit the log viewer so who really cares I guess (I saw a fix to add about:blank to the trusted sites of ie7 but that seems like a crazy security risk as many spyware and viruses can use this as a way into your system, so I wouldnt recommend that fix.. Havent seen any others on he net yet..
